Anthurium Luxurians Dark Velvet
Anthurium Luxurians Dark Velvet is a striking collector Anthurium prized for its deeply textured, dark green foliage and dramatic quilted appearance. The thick, leathery leaves develop a heavily bullate surface with raised sections between the veins, creating an almost reptilian texture. New leaves may emerge in bronze, reddish, or darker tones before gradually hardening into the rich green coloration of mature foliage.
The proper botanical name is Anthurium luxurians, a species native to Colombia. “Dark Velvet” is a horticultural or collector designation generally used for selected plants displaying especially dark, richly colored foliage rather than a formally recognized botanical variety. Anthurium luxurians is particularly valued for its unusual texture, which becomes increasingly pronounced as the plant matures.
Care
Anthurium Luxurians Dark Velvet does best in bright, indirect light. Plenty of filtered light encourages healthy growth and well-developed foliage while helping maintain its deep coloration. Avoid prolonged harsh direct sunlight, which can scorch or discolor the textured leaves.
Water when the top inch or two of the potting mix begins to dry, then water thoroughly and allow all excess water to drain. Anthurium Luxurians appreciates consistent moisture and generally prefers not to become completely dry for extended periods. However, constantly wet or waterlogged conditions can quickly lead to root problems.
Use a very airy, chunky and well-draining aroid potting mix in a container with excellent drainage. A mixture containing orchid bark, coco chips or coir, perlite or pumice, and a small amount of moisture-retentive material works well. The goal is to provide consistent moisture while maintaining plenty of oxygen around the roots.
Anthurium Luxurians Dark Velvet prefers warm temperatures and moderate to high humidity. Higher humidity can encourage larger, healthier foliage and help new leaves expand properly. Good airflow is especially important in humid conditions because water can remain within the deeply textured surface of the leaves.
This Anthurium develops a compact, upright to spreading growth habit, with increasingly substantial foliage emerging from a central stem. Give new leaves adequate space to expand without rubbing against neighboring plants or surfaces. The textured foliage can be easily marked or damaged, so avoid unnecessary handling and allow wet leaves to dry with good airflow.
Pet Safety
Anthurium Luxurians Dark Velvet is toxic to cats and dogs if ingested. Like other Anthuriums, it contains insoluble calcium oxalate crystals that can cause irritation of the mouth, tongue, and lips, along with drooling, vomiting, and difficulty swallowing. Keep it out of reach of pets and small children.
