Begonia Star Dragon
Begonia Star Dragon is an unusual foliage Begonia prized for its dramatic star-shaped leaves, deeply divided edges, and bold contrasting coloration. Its foliage can display shades of green, bronze, burgundy, silver, and reddish tones, with pronounced veins and a textured surface that gives the plant an almost reptilian appearance. The distinctive leaf shape becomes especially impressive as the plant matures, making Star Dragon an excellent choice for plant cabinets, terrariums, shelves, and specialty Begonia collections.
The plant is commonly sold as Begonia ‘Star Dragon’ or Star Dragon Begonia. It is a cultivated ornamental Begonia grown primarily for its distinctive foliage. Like many specialty Begonia cultivars, its exact coloration, markings, and intensity can vary depending on maturity, light, temperature, humidity, and growing conditions.
Care
Begonia Star Dragon does best in bright, indirect light. Good filtered light encourages compact growth and helps maintain the strongest coloration and contrasting markings in the foliage. Avoid prolonged harsh direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves.
Water when the top inch of soil begins to feel dry, then water thoroughly and allow excess water to drain. This Begonia prefers consistent moisture during active growth but should never remain soggy or waterlogged. Avoid allowing the potting mix to remain completely dry for extended periods.
Use a light, airy and well-draining potting mix in a container with drainage. A mixture containing quality houseplant soil or coco coir, perlite or pumice, and fine orchid bark works well. The goal is to retain enough moisture for healthy growth while maintaining plenty of oxygen around the roots.
Begonia Star Dragon prefers warm temperatures and moderate to high humidity. Higher humidity can encourage healthy new foliage and help prevent crispy leaf edges, but good airflow is important. Avoid allowing water to remain on the leaves for extended periods, particularly in enclosed or humid growing environments.
This plant generally develops a compact, spreading growth habit and is grown primarily for its dramatic foliage. Older or damaged leaves can be removed at the base to keep the plant looking its best. Its leaves can be delicate despite their rugged appearance, so avoid unnecessary handling while new growth is developing.
Pet Safety
Begonia Star Dragon is toxic to cats and dogs if ingested. Begonias contain soluble calcium oxalates that can cause irritation of the mouth and digestive tract, with the highest concentrations generally found in the underground portions of the plant. Keep it away from pets and small children.
