Begonia Heart’s Desire
Begonia Heart’s Desire is a striking foliage Begonia prized for its richly colored leaves featuring shades of deep green, burgundy, red, pink, and silvery tones. Its decorative foliage often displays contrasting centers, margins, and veining that give each leaf a layered, almost painted appearance. The combination of bold coloration and compact growth makes Heart’s Desire an excellent choice for shelves, plant cabinets, terrariums, and specialty Begonia collections.
The plant is commonly sold as Begonia ‘Heart’s Desire’. It is a cultivated ornamental Begonia grown primarily for its decorative foliage rather than its flowers. As with many specialty foliage Begonias, the intensity and balance of its colors can change depending on maturity, light levels, temperature, humidity, and other growing conditions.
Care
Begonia Heart’s Desire does best in bright, indirect light. Plenty of filtered light helps maintain strong coloration and compact growth. Avoid prolonged harsh direct sunlight, which can scorch the foliage and cause its more delicate colors to fade.
Water when the top inch of soil begins to feel dry, then water thoroughly and allow excess water to drain. This Begonia prefers lightly and consistently moist soil during active growth but should never remain soggy or waterlogged. Avoid allowing the potting mix to stay completely dry for extended periods.
Use a light, airy and well-draining potting mix in a container with drainage. A mixture containing quality houseplant soil or coco coir, perlite or pumice, and fine orchid bark works well. This provides enough moisture retention for healthy growth while maintaining good airflow around the roots.
Begonia Heart’s Desire prefers warm temperatures and moderate to high humidity. Additional humidity can encourage healthy foliage and help prevent crispy leaf edges, but good airflow is equally important. Avoid allowing water to remain on the leaves for extended periods, especially in humid environments.
This plant generally develops a compact, bushy to spreading growth habit. Older or damaged leaves can be removed at the base to maintain its appearance and make room for new growth. Begonia foliage can be somewhat delicate, so avoid unnecessary handling of the leaves.
Pet Safety
Begonia Heart’s Desire is toxic to cats and dogs if ingested. Begonias contain soluble calcium oxalates that can cause irritation of the mouth and digestive tract, with the highest concentrations generally found in the underground portions of the plant. Keep it away from pets and small children.
