Begonia Marge Hendon is a distinctive foliage Begonia prized for its boldly patterned leaves and rich mixture of green, silver, bronze, burgundy, and reddish tones. Its foliage develops an intricate, almost painted appearance, with contrasting veins and markings adding depth to each leaf. The combination of dramatic coloration and textured foliage makes it an excellent choice for shelves, tabletops, terrariums, and specialty Begonia collections.
Commonly sold as Begonia ‘Marge Hendon’, this is a cultivated ornamental Begonia grown primarily for its decorative foliage. Like many specialty Begonia cultivars, its exact coloration and pattern can change as individual leaves mature and may vary depending on lighting, temperature, and growing conditions.
Begonia Marge Hendon does best in bright, indirect light. Good filtered light encourages compact growth and helps maintain its strongest foliage coloration. Avoid prolonged direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves and damage their colorful patterns.
Water when the top inch of soil begins to feel dry, then water thoroughly and allow excess water to drain. Keep the potting mix lightly and consistently moist during active growth without allowing it to remain soggy or waterlogged. Avoid repeatedly allowing the plant to wilt completely between waterings.
Use a light, airy and well-draining potting mix in a container with drainage. A mixture containing quality houseplant soil or coco coir, perlite or pumice, and fine orchid bark works well. The roots appreciate consistent moisture combined with good drainage and plenty of airflow.
Begonia Marge Hendon prefers warm temperatures and moderate to high humidity. Additional humidity can encourage healthy foliage, but good airflow is important. Avoid allowing water to remain on the leaves for extended periods, particularly in enclosed or poorly ventilated growing spaces.
This Begonia develops a compact, bushy to spreading growth habit and is grown primarily for its ornamental foliage. Remove damaged or declining leaves as needed to improve airflow and keep the plant looking tidy. Established plants may also produce small flowers, although the dramatic foliage remains the primary attraction.
Begonia Marge Hendon is toxic to cats and dogs if ingested. Begonias contain soluble calcium oxalates, with higher concentrations generally found in the underground portions of the plant. Ingestion can cause irritation of the mouth and digestive tract, drooling, vomiting, or difficulty swallowing. Keep it out of reach of pets and small children.
