Begonia Sierra Silver is a striking foliage Begonia prized for its shimmering silver leaves accented by deep green to charcoal markings and darker contrasting veins. The metallic foliage can appear almost luminous under bright filtered light, while the darker edges and markings give each leaf additional depth and texture. Its compact, colorful growth makes it an excellent choice for tabletops, shelves, terrariums, and specialty Begonia collections.
Commonly sold as Begonia ‘Sierra Silver’, this is a cultivated ornamental Begonia grown primarily for its decorative foliage. Like many specialty foliage Begonias, its coloration and pattern can vary somewhat depending on maturity, lighting, and growing conditions.
Begonia Sierra Silver does best in bright, indirect light. Good filtered light helps maintain its strong silver coloration and compact growth. Avoid prolonged direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves and damage their delicate foliage.
Water when the top inch of soil begins to feel dry, then water thoroughly and allow excess water to drain. Keep the potting mix lightly and consistently moist during active growth without allowing it to remain soggy. Avoid repeatedly allowing the plant to wilt completely between waterings.
Use a light, airy and well-draining potting mix in a container with drainage. A mixture containing quality houseplant soil or coco coir with perlite, fine orchid bark, or similar amendments works well. The roots appreciate consistent moisture but require plenty of oxygen and good drainage.
Begonia Sierra Silver prefers warm temperatures and moderate to high humidity. Additional humidity can help keep the foliage looking its best, but good airflow is important. Avoid keeping the leaves constantly wet, particularly in areas with limited air circulation.
This Begonia develops a compact, bushy to spreading growth habit. Remove damaged or declining leaves as needed to keep the plant tidy and improve airflow around the crown. Its decorative foliage is the primary attraction, although established plants may also produce small Begonia flowers.
Begonia Sierra Silver is toxic to cats and dogs if ingested. Begonias contain soluble calcium oxalates, with the highest concentrations generally found in the underground portions of the plant. Ingestion can cause irritation of the mouth and digestive tract, drooling, vomiting, or difficulty swallowing. Keep it out of reach of pets and small children.
