Begonia U604 is an unusual collector Begonia prized for its highly textured foliage, pronounced veining, and dramatic tropical appearance. Its leaves have a sculptural quality that creates natural highlights and shadows across the surface, giving the plant an especially distinctive look when viewed up close. Its uncommon appearance makes it an excellent choice for specialty Begonia collections, terrariums, and humid indoor growing spaces.
The name Begonia U604 is a collector identification number rather than a formally published botanical species or cultivar name. In Begonia collecting, a “U” number is assigned to material that has not been confidently identified with a formally described species. Until its botanical identity is established, U604 is the appropriate designation rather than assigning it a speculative species name.
Begonia U604 does best in medium to bright, indirect light. Good filtered light encourages healthy, compact growth and helps display the texture and coloration of the foliage. Avoid prolonged direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves.
Water when the upper layer of the potting mix begins to feel slightly dry, keeping the soil lightly and consistently moist during active growth. Water thoroughly and allow excess water to drain. Avoid both prolonged drought and constantly saturated soil.
Use a light, airy and well-draining potting mix in a container with drainage. A mixture containing quality houseplant soil or coco coir, perlite or pumice, and fine orchid bark works well. The goal is to provide some moisture retention while maintaining plenty of oxygen around the roots.
Begonia U604 prefers warm temperatures and moderate to high humidity. Increased humidity can be particularly helpful for uncommon species-type Begonias, but it should always be paired with good airflow. Avoid allowing water to remain on the foliage for extended periods, especially in enclosed growing environments.
This Begonia develops a compact to spreading growth habit and is grown primarily for its unusual foliage. Stable conditions are preferable to sudden changes in temperature, humidity, or soil moisture. Remove declining leaves as needed to maintain airflow and keep the plant tidy.
Begonia U604 is toxic to cats and dogs if ingested. Begonias contain soluble calcium oxalates, with higher concentrations generally found in the underground portions of the plant. Ingestion can cause irritation of the mouth and digestive tract, drooling, vomiting, or difficulty swallowing. Keep it out of reach of pets and small children.
