Chlorophytum 'Fire Flash' is a vibrant tropical houseplant known for its striking orange stems and lush, glossy green foliage. Its broad, lance-shaped leaves emerge from brilliant orange petioles, creating a dramatic contrast that brings a splash of color to any indoor plant collection. Unlike the familiar trailing Spider Plant, 'Fire Flash' grows in a compact, upright rosette, making it an excellent choice for tabletops, shelves, and decorative planters. Its bold tropical appearance and relatively easy care make it a favorite among plant enthusiasts.
Commonly sold as Chlorophytum orchidastrum 'Fire Flash', this plant is also frequently labeled Chlorophytum amaniense 'Fire Flash' or 'Green Orange' in the horticultural trade. Although related to the traditional Spider Plant, it has a distinctly different appearance and growth habit.
Light: Prefers bright, indirect light but tolerates medium light conditions. Adequate indirect light helps maintain its vibrant orange stems and healthy green foliage. Avoid prolonged exposure to harsh direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves.
Watering: Allow the top 1–2 inches of soil to dry between waterings. Water thoroughly, allowing excess water to drain away. Keep the soil lightly moist during active growth without allowing it to become soggy. Reduce watering during cooler months.
Soil: Use a well-draining, nutrient-rich potting mix amended with perlite or orchid bark. The soil should retain some moisture while allowing excess water to drain freely.
Temperature & Humidity: Thrives in temperatures between 65–85°F and appreciates moderate to high humidity, ideally 50–70%. Protect from cold drafts and temperatures below 55°F. Higher humidity can help prevent crispy leaf edges.
Growth Habit: A compact, upright tropical plant that forms a dense rosette of broad green leaves supported by vivid orange petioles. Unlike traditional Spider Plants, it does not typically produce long trailing runners with plantlets. Mature plants may develop small flower spikes near the center of the foliage.
Generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs. Chlorophytum 'Fire Flash' is commonly regarded as a pet-friendly houseplant, although species-specific toxicity information is limited. Eating large amounts of plant material may still cause mild gastrointestinal upset, so it is best to discourage pets from chewing on the leaves.
