Begonia Black Storm
Begonia Black Storm is a dramatic foliage Begonia prized for its very dark leaves and striking contrasting markings. Its foliage can range from deep burgundy and chocolate brown to charcoal and nearly black, often accented by lighter green, silver, red, or metallic tones. The combination of intense coloration and intricate leaf patterning gives the plant a bold, moody appearance that stands out beautifully among brighter houseplants. Its manageable size makes it an excellent choice for shelves, plant cabinets, terrariums, and specialty Begonia collections.
The plant is commonly sold as Begonia ‘Black Storm’ or Black Storm Begonia. It is a cultivated ornamental Begonia grown primarily for its decorative foliage. The exact depth of its dark coloration and contrast can vary with maturity and growing conditions, particularly light and temperature.
Care
Begonia Black Storm does best in bright, indirect light. Good filtered light helps encourage compact growth and maintain the rich coloration of the foliage. Avoid prolonged harsh direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves. Very low light can result in weaker growth and less pronounced coloration.
Water when the top inch of soil begins to feel dry, then water thoroughly and allow excess water to drain. Black Storm prefers lightly and consistently moist soil during active growth but should never remain soggy or waterlogged. Avoid allowing the potting mix to stay completely dry for extended periods.
Use a light, airy and well-draining potting mix in a container with drainage. A mixture containing quality houseplant soil or coco coir, perlite or pumice, and fine orchid bark works well. This provides enough moisture retention for healthy growth while maintaining good airflow around the roots.
Begonia Black Storm prefers warm temperatures and moderate to high humidity. Additional humidity can help maintain healthy foliage and reduce crispy leaf edges, but good airflow is important. Avoid allowing water to remain on the foliage for extended periods, especially in enclosed or high-humidity growing environments.
This plant generally develops a compact, bushy to spreading growth habit and is grown primarily for its dramatic foliage. Older or damaged leaves can be removed at the base to maintain its appearance and make room for fresh growth. Its leaves can be delicate, so avoid unnecessary handling of new foliage.
Pet Safety
Begonia Black Storm is toxic to cats and dogs if ingested. Begonias contain soluble calcium oxalates that can cause irritation of the mouth and digestive tract, with the highest concentrations generally found in the underground portions of the plant. Keep it away from pets and small children.
