Opuntia Subulata Crested
Opuntia Subulata Crested is an unusual sculptural cactus known for its twisting, fan-shaped growth, irregular folds, and dense clusters of spines. Instead of producing the upright cylindrical stems typical of the standard form, the crested plant develops broad, wavy ridges that can become increasingly complex as it matures. Each specimen grows into a slightly different shape, making it an interesting choice for cactus collections, sunny windows, and decorative containers.
The plant is commonly sold as Opuntia subulata ‘Cristata’, Crested Eve’s Needle Cactus, or Crested Eve’s Pin Cactus. Its currently accepted botanical name is generally Austrocylindropuntia subulata, so it may also be labeled Austrocylindropuntia subulata f. cristata. The term “crested” or “cristata” describes an unusual growth pattern in which the normal growing point develops along an elongated line, producing the plant’s distinctive fans, folds, and waves.
Care
Opuntia Subulata Crested does best in very bright light with several hours of direct sun. A bright south- or west-facing window can work well indoors. Plants grown in lower light should be gradually acclimated to stronger direct sunlight to prevent scorching.
Water thoroughly and allow the soil to dry completely before watering again. This cactus is highly drought tolerant and much more sensitive to overwatering than underwatering. Reduce watering significantly during cooler months and periods of slower growth.
Use a fast-draining cactus or succulent mix and a pot with excellent drainage. Adding pumice, perlite, lava rock, horticultural sand, or other gritty materials can improve drainage and help prevent excess moisture from remaining around the roots.
Opuntia Subulata Crested prefers warm temperatures and low humidity during active growth. Good airflow is beneficial, particularly when grown indoors. It can tolerate cooler conditions when kept relatively dry, but protect container-grown plants from freezing temperatures and prolonged cold, wet conditions.
This plant has a slow to moderate-growing, crested growth habit. Over time, the crest can branch, fold, and develop increasingly elaborate shapes. Occasionally, normal cylindrical shoots may emerge from the crested plant. These can be removed if you want to maintain its predominantly crested appearance.
Pet Safety
Opuntia Subulata Crested is not considered a pet-safe plant. Its sharp spines and tiny irritating glochids can become embedded in the skin, mouth, or paws of cats and dogs and can cause significant physical irritation. Eating the plant may also cause gastrointestinal upset. Keep it away from pets and small children.
