Philodendron 'Birkin White Measure' is a stunning tropical houseplant known for its elegant, creamy-white pinstripes against deep green foliage. Each glossy leaf features delicate streaks of white, cream, and light green that radiate outward, creating a beautiful, almost hand-painted appearance. Its compact, upright growth habit and striking variegation make it an excellent choice for desks, shelves, tabletops, and decorative planters. With its refined appearance and relatively easy care, this Philodendron adds a sophisticated tropical touch to any indoor plant collection.
Botanically known as Philodendron 'Birkin', this plant is also commonly sold under the names 'White Measure' and 'White Wave'. These names generally refer to the same cultivated Philodendron, although plants marketed as 'White Measure' may be selected for their particularly prominent white variegation. Its distinctive markings can vary from leaf to leaf, making every plant unique.
Light: Prefers bright, indirect light to maintain its beautiful white pinstriping and encourage healthy growth. Can tolerate medium light conditions, although lower light may result in slower growth and less pronounced variegation. Avoid prolonged exposure to harsh direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves.
Watering: Allow the top 1–2 inches of soil to dry between waterings. Water thoroughly, allowing excess water to drain away. Avoid keeping the soil constantly soggy, as overwatering can lead to root rot. Reduce watering during cooler months.
Soil: Use a chunky, well-draining aroid mix containing orchid bark, perlite, coco coir, and quality potting soil. This provides the balance of moisture retention and airflow needed for healthy root development.
Temperature & Humidity: Thrives in temperatures between 65–85°F and appreciates moderate to high humidity, ideally 50–70%. Protect from cold drafts and temperatures below 55°F. Higher humidity can help prevent browning along the leaf edges.
Growth Habit: A slow to moderately growing, self-heading Philodendron that forms a compact, upright cluster of glossy, variegated leaves. Unlike climbing Philodendrons, it does not require a moss pole or trellis. Mature plants can reach approximately 2–3 feet tall indoors. Occasionally, new leaves may emerge with more green, cream, or even reddish coloration due to the naturally variable nature of its variegation.
Toxic to cats and dogs if ingested. Philodendrons contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals that can cause oral irritation, excessive drooling, vomiting, and difficulty swallowing. Keep this plant out of reach of curious pets.
