String of Pearls
String of Pearls is a unique trailing succulent known for its small, round, bead-like green leaves that grow along long cascading stems. The unusual spherical leaves store water and give the plant its signature pearl-like appearance. Its dramatic trailing growth makes it an excellent choice for hanging baskets, shelves, windowsills, and succulent collections.
The proper botanical name is Curio rowleyanus, although it is still commonly sold under its older botanical name Senecio rowleyanus. It is also widely known as String of Pearls or String of Beads.
Care
String of Pearls does best in very bright, indirect light with some gentle direct sun. A few hours of morning or late-afternoon sunlight can encourage compact, healthy growth. Make sure light reaches the top of the pot, not just the trailing vines, as insufficient light around the crown can cause thinning and bare spots.
Water thoroughly when the soil has dried completely or almost completely and allow excess water to drain. The round leaves store moisture, making String of Pearls much more tolerant of being kept slightly too dry than too wet. The pearls may begin to look slightly softer or less plump when the plant is ready for water.
Use a fast-draining cactus or succulent mix and a pot with drainage. Adding perlite, pumice, or another gritty material can improve drainage and help prevent excess moisture from remaining around the roots.
String of Pearls prefers warm temperatures and low to moderate humidity. Normal household humidity works well, and good airflow is beneficial. Keep it away from freezing temperatures and avoid consistently damp or humid conditions.
This plant has a trailing growth habit and can develop vines several feet long when mature. Regular trimming can encourage fuller growth, and cuttings can be placed back onto the soil to fill in the top of the pot. Mature plants may also produce small white flowers with a sweet, cinnamon-like fragrance.
Pet Safety
String of Pearls is toxic to cats and dogs if ingested. It can cause gastrointestinal upset and other symptoms, so keep it away from pets and small children.
