Alocasia longiloba 'Purple Vein' is a striking tropical houseplant known for its dramatic, arrow-shaped leaves, elegant veining, and beautiful purple-toned undersides. Its elongated, deep green foliage features prominent veins that create a bold contrast against the leaf surface, while subtle purple hues add depth and character. With its sculptural growth habit and exotic appearance, 'Purple Vein' makes a stunning addition to indoor plant collections, decorative planters, and tropical displays. Its distinctive foliage is especially appealing to collectors who appreciate unusual Alocasia varieties.
Botanically associated with Alocasia longiloba, this plant belongs to the Araceae family and originates from tropical regions of Southeast Asia. 'Purple Vein' is a horticultural trade name used for plants displaying pronounced veining and purple coloration. Because Alocasia longiloba is a variable species complex, plants sold under this name may differ somewhat in leaf shape, coloration, and mature size.
Light: Prefers bright, indirect light to maintain its rich foliage coloration and encourage healthy growth. Gentle morning sunlight may be beneficial, but prolonged exposure to harsh direct sunlight can scorch the leaves. Avoid very low light conditions, which can lead to weak growth.
Watering: Allow the top 1–2 inches of soil to dry slightly between waterings. Water thoroughly, allowing excess water to drain away. Alocasia prefers evenly moist soil during active growth but is sensitive to waterlogged conditions. Reduce watering during cooler months or periods of dormancy.
Soil: Use a chunky, well-draining aroid mix containing orchid bark, perlite, coco coir, and quality potting soil. The mixture should retain some moisture while providing excellent airflow around the roots.
Temperature & Humidity: Thrives in temperatures between 65–85°F and appreciates high humidity, ideally 60–80%. Protect from cold drafts, sudden temperature changes, and temperatures below 60°F. Consistent humidity helps encourage healthy leaf development and prevents crispy leaf edges.
Growth Habit: An upright, rhizomatous tropical plant that produces elongated, arrow-shaped leaves on slender stems. Its foliage may develop prominent veining and purple-toned undersides as it matures. Under favorable indoor conditions, plants may reach approximately 2–3 feet tall, although mature size varies. New leaves emerge from the center of the plant, and established specimens may produce small corms that can develop into additional plants. Some leaf loss during cooler months or dormancy is normal.
Toxic to cats and dogs if ingested. Alocasia contains insoluble calcium oxalate crystals that can cause oral irritation, excessive drooling, vomiting, and difficulty swallowing. Keep this plant out of reach of curious pets.
