Begonia Ghost Whisperer
Begonia Ghost Whisperer is a striking foliage Begonia prized for its silvery to icy-white leaves accented with darker green, charcoal, burgundy, or nearly black markings. The pale, almost luminous foliage creates a dramatic contrast with its darker veins and edges, giving the plant the ghostly appearance behind its name. Its intricate coloring and compact growth make it an excellent choice for shelves, plant cabinets, terrariums, and specialty Begonia collections.
The plant is commonly sold as Begonia ‘Ghost Whisperer’ or Ghost Whisperer Begonia. It is a cultivated ornamental Begonia grown primarily for its decorative foliage. Like many specialty foliage Begonias, the exact balance of silver, white, green, and darker coloration can vary depending on the individual plant, maturity, light, temperature, and growing conditions.
Care
Begonia Ghost Whisperer does best in bright, indirect light. Good filtered light helps maintain its pale silver coloration and contrasting darker markings while encouraging compact growth. Avoid prolonged harsh direct sunlight, which can scorch the lighter portions of the foliage.
Water when the top inch of soil begins to feel dry, then water thoroughly and allow excess water to drain. This Begonia prefers consistent moisture during active growth but should never remain soggy or waterlogged. Avoid allowing the potting mix to stay completely dry for extended periods.
Use a light, airy and well-draining potting mix in a pot with drainage. A mixture containing quality houseplant soil or coco coir, perlite or pumice, and fine orchid bark works well. The goal is to retain enough moisture for healthy growth while still maintaining plenty of airflow around the roots.
Begonia Ghost Whisperer prefers warm temperatures and moderate to high humidity. Additional humidity can help maintain healthy foliage and reduce crispy leaf edges, but good airflow is equally important. Avoid allowing water to remain on the leaves for extended periods, particularly in high-humidity environments.
This plant has a compact, bushy to spreading growth habit and is grown primarily for its highly decorative foliage. Older or damaged leaves can be removed at the base to maintain its appearance and make room for new growth. Avoid unnecessary handling of the leaves, as Begonia foliage can be delicate and easily damaged.
Pet Safety
Begonia Ghost Whisperer is toxic to cats and dogs if ingested. Begonias contain soluble calcium oxalates that can cause irritation of the mouth and digestive tract, with the highest concentrations generally found in the underground portions of the plant. Keep it away from pets and small children.
