Begonia Goth Doll is a dramatic foliage Begonia prized for its dark, nearly black to deep burgundy leaves accented with contrasting pink, red, silver, or metallic tones. Its rich coloration and intricate leaf patterning create a moody, almost gothic appearance that makes it stand out among more traditional Begonias. Its compact size and highly decorative foliage make it an excellent choice for shelves, terrariums, plant cabinets, and colorful indoor plant displays.
The plant is commonly sold as Begonia ‘Goth Doll’ or Goth Doll Begonia. It is a cultivated ornamental Begonia grown primarily for its distinctive foliage. Like many specialty foliage Begonias, its exact coloring can change depending on light, temperature, humidity, maturity, and growing conditions.
Care
Begonia Goth Doll does best in bright, indirect light. Good filtered light encourages compact growth and helps maintain its deepest dark coloration and contrasting markings. Avoid prolonged harsh direct sunlight, which can scorch the foliage or cause its colors to fade.
Water when the top inch of soil begins to feel dry, then water thoroughly and allow excess water to drain. This Begonia prefers consistent moisture during active growth but should never remain soggy or waterlogged. Avoid allowing the potting mix to stay completely dry for extended periods.
Use a light, airy and well-draining potting mix in a pot with drainage. A mixture containing quality houseplant soil or coco coir, perlite or pumice, and fine orchid bark works well. The goal is to retain enough moisture for healthy growth while maintaining plenty of airflow around the roots.
Begonia Goth Doll prefers warm temperatures and moderate to high humidity. Additional humidity can encourage healthy foliage and help prevent crispy leaf edges, but good airflow is equally important. Avoid allowing water to remain on the foliage for extended periods, particularly in high-humidity environments.
This plant has a compact, bushy to spreading growth habit and is grown primarily for its spectacular foliage. Older or damaged leaves can be removed at the base to maintain its appearance. Begonia leaves can be delicate, so avoid unnecessary handling, particularly while new foliage is developing.
Pet Safety
Begonia Goth Doll is toxic to cats and dogs if ingested. Begonias contain soluble calcium oxalates that can cause irritation of the mouth and digestive tract, with the highest concentrations generally found in the underground portions of the plant. Keep it away from pets and small children.
