Norfolk Island Pine is a beautiful evergreen tree known for its soft, feathery needles, symmetrical branches, and elegant, tiered growth habit. Its delicate, bright green foliage creates a lush, miniature forest appearance that brings a natural, peaceful feel to indoor spaces. Often enjoyed as a living Christmas tree during the holidays, Norfolk Island Pine makes an attractive houseplant year-round. With proper care, this charming tree can grow into an impressive indoor statement plant, adding height, texture, and timeless greenery to any home or office.
Botanically known as Araucaria heterophylla, Norfolk Island Pine is native to Norfolk Island in the South Pacific. Despite its common name, it is not a true pine but belongs to the Araucariaceae family. In its natural habitat, it can grow into a towering evergreen tree, while indoor specimens grow much more slowly and remain manageable for many years.
Light: Prefers bright, indirect light and benefits from a few hours of gentle morning or late afternoon sunlight. Place near a bright window and rotate periodically to encourage even growth. Insufficient light can cause weak growth, drooping branches, and thinning foliage.
Watering: Allow the top 1–2 inches of soil to dry slightly between waterings. Water thoroughly, allowing excess water to drain away. Norfolk Island Pine prefers consistently light moisture but should never sit in soggy soil. Avoid allowing the soil to dry out completely for extended periods, as this can cause browning and needle drop.
Soil: Use a well-draining, slightly acidic potting mix containing peat or coco coir, perlite, and fine pine bark. The mixture should retain some moisture while allowing excess water to drain freely.
Temperature & Humidity: Thrives in temperatures between 60–75°F and appreciates moderate to high humidity, ideally 50–70%. Protect from cold drafts, heating vents, and sudden temperature changes. Dry indoor air can cause browning along the branches and needle tips.
Growth Habit: A slow-growing evergreen tree with a naturally symmetrical, upright growth habit and evenly spaced horizontal branches. Indoors, it may eventually reach 6–8 feet tall or more under favorable conditions. Its soft, needle-like foliage develops in distinctive tiers as the tree matures. Avoid cutting the central growing tip, as this can permanently alter its natural shape.
Potentially toxic to cats and dogs if ingested. Norfolk Island Pine may cause mild gastrointestinal upset, including vomiting and diarrhea, when consumed. Its needles can also cause physical irritation. Keep this plant out of reach of curious pets and discourage chewing on the foliage.
