Tillandsia aeranthos × stricta is a beautiful hybrid air plant known for its graceful, pointed foliage and colorful blooms. Its slender, green to silvery-green leaves form an attractive rosette, creating a full, slightly spiky appearance that brings texture and movement to any display. When mature, this hybrid may produce striking pink to rosy-red flower bracts accented by delicate purple or violet flowers. With its compact growth habit, colorful flowering potential, and easy soil-free care, the Aeranthos Stricta Hybrid makes a wonderful addition to driftwood arrangements, hanging displays, and collections of unique air plants.
This hybrid is a cross between Tillandsia aeranthos and Tillandsia stricta, two epiphytic species native to South America. Both parent plants belong to the Bromeliaceae family and are appreciated for their attractive foliage and colorful flowers. Individual hybrids may display slightly different leaf shapes, sizes, and flowering characteristics depending on their parentage. Like other Tillandsias, this plant absorbs moisture and nutrients through specialized scales called trichomes on its leaves rather than relying on traditional soil.
Light: Prefers bright, indirect light with some gentle morning sunlight. Good lighting encourages compact growth and supports healthy flowering. Avoid prolonged exposure to harsh afternoon sunlight, which can scorch the foliage. A bright east-facing window or a filtered south-facing window is ideal.
Watering: Soak the plant in room-temperature water for approximately 20–30 minutes once a week, adjusting the frequency based on humidity, temperature, and airflow. In particularly dry environments, an additional thorough misting between soakings may be beneficial. After watering, gently shake off excess moisture and place the plant upside down or at an angle in a well-ventilated area until completely dry. Avoid allowing water to remain trapped in the center of the rosette.
Soil: No soil required! This hybrid is an epiphytic air plant that can be mounted on driftwood, cork bark, decorative branches, or displayed in an open container. Avoid planting it in traditional potting soil, and choose displays that allow plenty of airflow around the foliage.
Temperature & Humidity: Thrives in temperatures between 60–85°F and appreciates moderate humidity, ideally 40–70%. Protect from frost, cold drafts, and prolonged exposure to temperatures below 50°F. Good air circulation is essential, particularly after watering, to prevent moisture-related problems.
Growth Habit: A compact, rosette-forming air plant with slender, pointed leaves that create a graceful, slightly upright appearance. Mature plants may produce colorful flower spikes with pink to reddish bracts and purple or violet flowers. Like other bromeliads, each rosette typically flowers once before gradually producing offsets, commonly called pups. These pups can be left attached to develop an attractive cluster or carefully separated once sufficiently mature. Over time, established plants may form a beautiful grouping of multiple rosettes.
Generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs. Tillandsia species and their hybrids are widely regarded as pet-friendly houseplants. However, chewing on the foliage may cause mild digestive upset, and the delicate leaves can be damaged by curious pets. Display this air plant in a secure location where it can grow undisturbed.
