Tillandsia caput-medusae is a fascinating tropical air plant known for its twisting, snake-like leaves and unusual sculptural appearance. Its thick, silvery-green foliage curls and spirals outward from a swollen, bulbous base, resembling the mythical Medusa's head of snakes. The leaves are covered in tiny, moisture-absorbing scales that give the plant a soft, frosted appearance. When mature, it may produce a beautiful flower spike with colorful pinkish-red bracts and violet flowers. With its distinctive shape and soil-free growing habit, Medusa's Head Air Plant is a wonderful addition to hanging displays, driftwood arrangements, and collections of unusual tropical plants.
Botanically known as Tillandsia caput-medusae, this species belongs to the Bromeliaceae family and is native to Mexico and Central America. Its botanical name translates to “head of Medusa,” referring to the twisting foliage that resembles the snakes of the legendary Greek figure. It is an epiphytic plant that naturally grows attached to trees and other surfaces, absorbing moisture and nutrients through specialized scales called trichomes on its leaves.
Light: Prefers bright, indirect light with some gentle morning sunlight. Its silvery foliage helps it tolerate relatively bright conditions, but prolonged exposure to intense afternoon sun can cause scorching. A bright windowsill with filtered sunlight is ideal.
Watering: Thoroughly wet the plant approximately once or twice a week, adjusting for humidity, temperature, and airflow. A brief soak of 10–20 minutes can be used, but avoid prolonged soaking because its bulbous base can trap moisture. After watering, gently shake off excess water and place the plant upside down or at an angle in a well-ventilated area until completely dry. Never allow water to remain trapped inside the swollen base, as this can cause rot.
Soil: No soil required! Tillandsia caput-medusae is an epiphytic air plant that can be mounted on cork bark, driftwood, decorative branches, or displayed in an open container. Avoid planting it in traditional potting soil or placing it in enclosed containers without adequate airflow.
Temperature & Humidity: Thrives in temperatures between 60–85°F and appreciates moderate humidity, ideally 40–70%. Protect from frost, cold drafts, and temperatures below 50°F. Good airflow is especially important for this species because moisture can become trapped within its bulbous base.
Growth Habit: A slow to moderately growing air plant with a distinctive swollen base and twisting, curling leaves. As it matures, its foliage becomes increasingly sculptural, developing the characteristic Medusa-like appearance. Mature plants may produce a colorful flower spike with reddish bracts and violet tubular flowers. Each rosette typically blooms once before gradually producing offsets, or pups, near its base. These pups can be left attached to form an attractive cluster or carefully separated once sufficiently developed.
Generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs. Tillandsia species are widely regarded as pet-friendly houseplants. However, chewing on the leaves may cause mild digestive upset, and the delicate foliage can be damaged by curious pets. Display this air plant in a secure location where it can grow undisturbed.
