Begonia Tiger Kitten is a compact foliage Begonia prized for its small, boldly patterned leaves with rich green, bronze, burgundy, and reddish-brown coloring. Dark markings and contrasting veins give the foliage a striped or tiger-like appearance, while its petite leaves create a dense display as the plant fills out. Its manageable size makes it particularly well suited for shelves, tabletops, terrariums, and specialty Begonia collections.
Commonly sold as Begonia ‘Tiger Kitten’, this is a cultivated ornamental Begonia grown primarily for its decorative foliage. Its coloration and pattern can vary somewhat as individual leaves mature and in response to lighting, temperature, and growing conditions.
Begonia Tiger Kitten does best in bright, indirect light. Good filtered light encourages compact growth and helps maintain the strong contrast in its foliage. Avoid prolonged direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves.
Water when the top inch of soil begins to feel dry, then water thoroughly and allow excess water to drain. Keep the potting mix lightly and consistently moist during active growth without allowing it to remain soggy. Avoid repeatedly allowing the plant to wilt completely between waterings.
Use a light, airy and well-draining potting mix in a container with drainage. A mixture containing quality houseplant soil or coco coir, perlite or pumice, and fine orchid bark works well. The roots appreciate consistent moisture while still requiring good drainage and airflow.
Begonia Tiger Kitten prefers warm temperatures and moderate to high humidity. Additional humidity can encourage lush growth, but good airflow is important. Avoid allowing water to remain on the foliage for extended periods, particularly in enclosed growing spaces.
This Begonia develops a compact, low-growing to spreading habit. Its smaller size makes it a good candidate for terrariums and other humid displays, provided there is adequate airflow. Remove damaged or declining leaves as needed to keep the plant tidy and reduce the chance of fungal problems.
Begonia Tiger Kitten is toxic to cats and dogs if ingested. Begonias contain soluble calcium oxalates, with higher concentrations generally found in the underground portions of the plant. Ingestion can cause irritation of the mouth and digestive tract, drooling, vomiting, or difficulty swallowing. Keep it out of reach of pets and small children.
